Short answer. GONE Fishing sets a daily sacrifice quota. The store page says players "must sacrifice a certain amount of fish to the beast every day if you want to survive" [S1]. If the altar has not received enough when players sleep, GONE Studios says a player is still killed by the monster [S2]. A dead player respawns after waiting until the next day, or at once if a heart is sacrificed [S3]. The monster killing the last living player is described as a game over [S4].

How the daily quota works

Players meet the quota by sacrificing fish at the altar, and the quota is counted in fish value. In the Early Access update of 22 July 2025, GONE Studios wrote that players "can now see the amount of fish value they need to meet quota for the given day" [S5]. The Early Access update of 2 August 2025 added a totem that shows progress: "As you feed fish to the altar, the totems bar will glow and indicate how close you are to meeting quota." [S26] On 6 August 2025 the studio added "text in the tackle box that displays the quota for the given day" [S7].

For a sense of scale, the YouTube channel Calidos, in the video "GONE Fishing | Beginner Guide" (20 May 2026), reads a first-day quota off the screen: "my quota for the day is 44" at [6:36] [S8]. That figure comes from one pre-release run on the hardest difficulty, and the quota rework of the full release (see below) means it should not be read as a current number.

The check is made at the moment of the sacrifice. In the Early Access update of 30 December 2025, GONE Studios wrote that "each time a fish is dropped/taken out of the altar, the game will calculate if quota is met", so the game knows whether to kill a player when players go to sleep "regardless of fish rot or other potential bugs" [S9]. In the same Early Access period, peaceful mode was changed on 10 January 2026 "so that quota is met regardless of fish being in the altar or not" [S10].

What happens when the quota is missed

The studio's July 2026 wording is direct. In the Early Access update of 15 July 2026, a host-only "Force next day" button was described, with the warning "If you have not sacrificed enough in the altar a player will still be killed by the monster" [S2]. The button appears when "the time is later than 22:30 (10:30 pm)" [S2].

Calidos shows the result on the hardest difficulty: after dropping a fish short of the quota, going to bed brings the game over animation at [15:49] to [16:09] [S8]. At [16:42] Calidos adds that on Jeremy Wade difficulty, failing quota or dying means losing the save, and at [17:02] reads the hardcore tooltip as "your save file will be deleted upon a game over" [S8].

Two things can stop a missed quota from ending the run. Both come from Early Access sources:

  • The dog. The Early Access update of 28 August 2025 added a "second life": when one player is left alive, or the game is single player, and the dog is alive, the creature attacks the dog instead of a player at night [S4]. The same post says that with more than one player alive "the monster will kill a random player regardless if the dog is alive or not" [S4]. Bigsexy of GONE Studios repeated the dog rule in a forum reply on 17 September 2026 at 17:49 UTC (post 75) [S11]. The same reply says "the quota stops scaling afer day 40" [S11].
  • The heart. The Early Access update of 17 January 2026 says that if you fail quota and go to sleep, "the heart will also prevent the monster from grabbing" the player from the cabin [S12].

How quota grows

The formula has been rewritten more than once, and the sources do not agree on where growth stops.

  • On 19 February 2026, GONE Studios published "(RandomFloat * Minimum(dayNumber, 35)) + currentQuota", with the random float depending on difficulty, and said "the quota should grow fairly linearly after day 35" [S13].
  • On 26 March 2026 the studio added the slowing metabolism totem to the formula and wrote that the totem "will continually reduce the quota for each following day", with the day "clamped at 35" [S14].
  • On 7 July 2026 the studio listed Jeremy Wade changes: "Reduced the base quota for JW by 20% on Arctic Jungle and Canyon", "Reduced the base quota for JW by 10% on the Lake and Swamp", and "Reduced quota growth rate by 20% for all maps" [S15].
  • In the same thread, Bigsexy of GONE Studios wrote on 6 July 2026 at 13:39 UTC that "quota growth stops at day 40" [S16]. On 4 October 2026 at 04:56 UTC, LeeFoster2 replied that on average difficulty with a friend the quota was still growing on about day 47, and asked whether the stop applies on all difficulties [S16]. No answer follows in the thread [S16].
  • The Early Access update of 10 September 2026 raised the growth: "I have adjusted the quota growth modifier by 1.25x" [S17].

The release post of 20 October 2026 adds a rework for 1.0. It says "No longer does quota scale linearly with the number of players", and that the new formula accounts for the reduced productivity that comes with additional players [S18]. The same post says the starting quota on the swamp map was reduced to match the lake map [S18]. For the rest of what changed at release, see the page on what the full release changed.

What happens when you die

Death does not end a run by itself while other players are alive. The tip added in the Early Access update of 1 September 2026 tells dead players "how they can respawn from waiting until the next day or they can sacrifice the heart to revive dead friends instantly" [S3].

  • Heart in the altar. The Early Access update of 13 November 2025 added a catchable heart: "drop it in the altar to resurrect dead friends instantly" [S19]. The same line says only one will be in the game at a time [S19].
  • Solo play. The Early Access update of 17 January 2026 states that if you die while playing solo but had previously sacrificed the heart, "you will be revived instead of a game over" [S12]. On the YouTube channel Calidos, the video of 20 May 2026 shows the effect on a day 40 save: after throwing a heart in the altar, "if I were to die or not meet quota, I would not get a game over" at [22:03] [S8].
  • Where you come back. The channel Zanarkan13, in "GONE Fishing - Deep Dive Guide - Episode 4 - Jungle" (14 October 2026, before the full release), shows the Jungle respawn cave at [3:07], where a revived player spawns [S20].
  • What you lose. The Early Access update of 3 January 2026 says "Players now drop items on death and on exiting the game (not bait tho, there's got to be some sort of punishment)" [S21].

Dying to a creature can sometimes be escaped: the Early Access update of 5 October 2025 added a "struggle" mechanic that lets players "escape death" [S22]. For which creatures kill and how to survive them, see the enemies page. Hearts also appear in the release post, which says players "now get two hearts (tier 6 bait) after defeating the boss and upgrading the butcher table" [S18]; see the ending and final boss page.

Respawn bugs and the death code rework

Respawn has been a bug source throughout Early Access. On the forum, Daniel_USA reported on 30 October 2025 at 01:10 UTC that after dying to TNT they had not revived after sleeping through two nights [S6]. Bigsexy replied at 15:38 UTC that "When a player died to tnt, there was a chance that the correct player reference was not being passed to the code that handels death which would result in the player never being respawned" [S6]. Daniel_USA added on 31 October 2025 at 05:20 UTC that reloading the game fixed it before the update [S6].

On 17 October 2026 at 04:29 UTC, a player named yo wrote that this was not fixed [S6]. Bigsexy answered at 14:08 UTC the same day: "ive spent the morning reworking all of the death/respawn code and noticed several bugs" and said the fixes would come in "tuesdays massive 1.0 update" [S6].

After a game over

The Early Access update of 11 June 2026 added a Return to lobby button on the game over screen: for non-hardcore play the game loads the save file and play resumes where it left off, and for hardcore play "the game will reset to day 1 on the current map" [S23]. This is later than the Calidos video above, which describes the save being deleted [S8]. The preview post of 18 October 2026 says defeating the boss unlocks the MOBY and Jeremy Wade difficulty [S24].
